Recommissioning a motorcycle after long-term storage

A checklist for bringing a motorcycle back into use after months or years off the road: fluids, brakes, tyres, fuel system and a careful first ride.

Recommissioning a motorcycle after long-term storage

Start with inspection, not the starter button

Before turning the engine over, check for leaks, perished hoses, seized controls and signs of rodents. A bike stored without preparation may have stale fuel and a varnished fuel system.

Fluids and brakes

Brake fluid absorbs moisture over time; replace it and check calipers move freely. Change engine oil and, where relevant, coolant. Inspect fork seals for weeping.

Tyres and first ride

Tyres age even without use — check the date code and look for cracking. After recommissioning, ride gently and re-check everything once warm.

Our workshop recommissions one bike at a time, with specialist work managed through trusted partners.
